Our Approach to Holistic Mental Health

We are person centered

We emphasize the various factors that influence mental health and look at the whole person beyond labels or diagnoses.

Our approach is unique because we are queer focused, based and run.

Being part of the queer community brings unique challenges, and we aim to help folx navigate these challenges and the impact they have on mental health.

Sage Nestler, MSW’s coaching programs incorporate collaboration with and referrals to necessary resources and professionals. This ensures that we are able to provide you with the tools you need to improve various areas of your life.

Holistic Mental Health Pillars

Sage Nestler, MSW provides one-on-one and group coaching, as well as preventative mental health programs. We help you to address your mental health by examining various areas of your life, and any changes that can be made to make improvements.

However, we also focus on helping you establish coping mechanisms for things that are out of your control.

Mental health is the focus of our stance on holistic health, and we have a unique method of looking at each pillar of holistic health, as seen below.

Our approach takes into account the unique challenges the queer community faces that impact our mental health and wellbeing. But we also acknowledge how other factors (such as our varying identities) contribute to our mental health landscape.

We take each of the holistic health pillars to a different level by bringing in knowledge of ways marginalized folx are impacted in each area.

  • Individual coaching with Sage is specialized to your needs, and we work hand in hand with you to create a personalized program.

  • Our group coaching programs are designed to focus on different topics and methods.

  • We provide preventative mental health educational programs that address each of the holistic pillars to help intervene before mental health decline or illness occurs

  • We look at physical health in a way that include sphysical health factors that impact the queer community, such as access to gender affirming care. Our approach also addresses chronic illness and disability, and how physical and mental health are connected.

  • While nutrition often includes "healthy eating" or weight loss, our approach addresses eating disorders, disordered eating, and the Health at Every Size Approach. We also provide resources for food insecurity, and come from a mindful eating approach.

  • We incorporate alternative healing methods with traditional, including bibliotherapy, therapeutic art coaching, and more.

  • We understand that everyone's social/connection needs differ. Sage is AuDHD and is passionate about addressing how neurodivergent folx have varying connection needs and provide accommodations.

  • For many of us in the queer community, religion has been harmful. Our stance on spirituality is centered more on what spirituality means to each person. We provide a lot of nature based practices surroundinging spirituality. But we do keep a discussion on religious harm - as well as how religion has shaped a lot of us - open for those who need it.

  • What intellectual fulfillment means differs from person to person. We help individuals explore what this means to them, from furthering education, to reading or watching educational based materials, to expanding knowledge on any of their passions. We examine intellectual-based pursuits with a childlike wonder.

  • Finances can come with a lot of stress or shame. We come from a shame-free approach on all accounts. Our work involves helping individuals identify ways they want to address their finances, may that be budgeting and addressing debt, or changing their relationship with money. We also address money-based addictions, such as shopping and gambling, and provide essential resources when necessary.

  • Environment refers to our immediate surroundings and the communities where we work and live. Our approach addresses identifyies what changes we can make in our personal surroundings that benefit our mental health. We also focus on engaging with our natural world in planet friendly ways, while highlighting how doing things for our planet's health - such as recycling, picking up trash or lessening car use - contribute to our collective wellbeing.
