NYC Therapy Seekers Show Signs of Anxiety, Depression, and Burnout In The City That Never Sleeps
SAN FRANCISCO, September 9, 2025 – Octave, the mental health platform with a personal touch that is transforming premium, affordable mental health care into standard practice, has released its first-ever State Of Mind Report: New York City Edition. These critical insights highlight the mental health challenges endured by residents across New York City’s boroughs.
Between January 2023 and June 2025, Octave studied anonymous intake data on NYC therapy seekers to better understand how they tick. The report findings reveal the significant need for mental health support in NYC, with notable trends in experiencing burnout, anxiety, and depression. Through this research, Octave aims to raise awareness and integrate the findings into their therapy model to meet the evolving needs of New Yorkers.
“This report gives us a snapshot of how New Yorkers are really doing, and let’s just say, the city that never sleeps could use a nap,” said Golee Abrishami, PhD, - Head of Clinical Care. “Burnout, anxiety, and depression are front and center. While more people are reaching out for help, many are still silently struggling. This report aims to remind people they're not alone, even in a city of 8 million, while highlighting unexpected borough connections and showing that Octave is here to help.”
NYC Edition Takeaways:
● The Burnout Borough: Brooklyn residents are doing the most, where more than 6% feel burnt
out
● A Cloud Over Queens: 20% of Queens residents report that they are depressed
● Anxiety’s Hold on NYC Women: Across all boroughs, 1 in 3 women of NYC are seeking care for
anxiety
● Depressed Express: 15% of men and 15% of women in NYC expressed they were feeling depressed, highlighting a widespread need for therapy for depression NYC
As the findings in The State of Mind Report: New York City Edition reveal, mental health challenges in NYC are as layered and varied as the city itself. From borough burnout to subway-specific crying habits, the data not only reflects the depth of what New Yorkers are facing, but it also underscores the importance of destigmatizing care and meeting people where they are.
